2018 Tournament Results

There were 342 teams that showed up to compete for the 28thannual Mountain Music Kids Invitational Bass Fishing Tournament on Douglas Lake July 28, 2018. This year was very tough without Gloria Jackson by our side. We lost Gloria last year, due to cancer, but she was with us in spirit. It was a beautiful day for fishing and enjoying the outdoors! On-site registration, raffle prize drawings and the Casting Kids competition kicked off at 9 a.m. followed by hamburgers and hot dogs courtesy of Citizen’s National Bank and Swaggerty Sausage. Food City in Kodak, TN also donated cookies and drinks for the anglers.

Every team that entered received a goody bag complete with fishing lures and plastic worms, pencil, notebook, crayons, ruler, New Testament Bible (provided by the Gideon’s), crackers, a can of Bush’s beans, a spool of Berkley fishing line as well as a Mountain Music Kids Tournament t-shirt. Kodak Church of Christ also handed out a bag that had a Bible, school supplies, pencil pouch and a handout about how Jesus fed the 5000. There was also karaoke provided by Pinky and Poppa Dwhile the food was cooking. Volunteer Bassmasters plus a few helpers from the Mountain Music Kids Staff conducted the Casting Kids competition.

There were 5 different age groups and the winners were: age 8 and under – Tenley Ball from Chuckey, TN, 9-10 year old – Cade Troutman from Virginia, 11-12 year old – Jackson Farmer from Seymour, TN, 13-15 year old – Jake Rogers from Knoxville, TN, 16 year old – Cade Odell from Dandridge, TN.

The raffle prize drawings included a TV, kayak, coolers, rods and reels and more all donated by sponsors. After the raffle drawings, Preacher Bill Stephens prayed over the tournament and Sunny DeFOE went over the rules. Blast off started at 3 p.m. just like a professional event. As the anglers and kids made the way to their honey holes, Scenic Helicopter Tours (thanks to Marci Nikirk) flew over and gave us some awesome aerial photos. After a tough 4 hours out on the water, all teams came back in at 7 p.m. to weigh-in their fish.

Thanks to Douglas Lake Headwaters Campground (our host for the event) we were able to set up inside the campground and keep the kids and spectators away from the flow of traffic. Corky’s Custom Flooring also provided smoked pork barbeque and chicken for the anglers. Thanks Corky! This was an awesome set up with the lake in the background. The stage was set just like a B.A.S.S. event with aerated tubs for the fish in bags and a big stage where the kids and parents could hold up their fish for pictures.

When all the weighing was done and all boats had checked in, the winner was Kendall and Corey Owenby with 3 fish weighing 14.08 lbs. Their efforts netted them a nice trophy and $1,000.00.

After the scales had closed, White Pine Marine came up and spoke about what this tournament means to the kids and thanked Stanley Jackson for running such a great event. White Pine Marine also presented one lucky fisherman that entered the tournament and brand new Tracker Topper 14’ with a 15 hp. Four stroke Mercury engine and trailer. The lucky fisherman was Larry and Braxton Dotson!! Every boat must have a name so we named the brand new rig “Miss Gloria” in her honor.  We hope you enjoy your new Tracker boat Mr. Dotson!

Professional Angler Ott DeFoe also attended the event and fished with his twin son and daughter. Ott also spoke about what it means to take a kid fishing and the difference it made in his life. You can already see the difference it is making in his kids’ lives! The Mountain Music Kids Staff also wants to extend thanks to all TWRA officers that came and helped as well as the Jefferson County Rescue Squad and Sevier County Rescue Squad!

After all the sponsors were thanked and the top 100 places were paid, it was time to send the rest of the field to the prize tent. That’s right folks, no kid leaves empty handed! The rest of the field received prizes ranging from a brand new bicycle to tackle boxes (with lures), rod and reel combos, toys, etc.! We hope every kid had a great time and we pray that you were blessed for the time spent to make a child’s life better!
